CCGPS (Common Core Georgia Performance Standards)

Georgia, along with 44 other states, the District of Columbia (D.C.), 2 territories, and the Department of Defense Education Activity, have joined in formally adopting a set of core standards for kindergarten through high school in English language arts, mathematics, and grades 6-12 literacy in science, history/social studies, and technical subjects. The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) provide a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace. These standards represent a common sense next step from the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS).
States and national organizations representing educators were given the opportunity to share feedback in the development of the standards.  With the skills and knowledge needed by students to be successful in college and career, these standards are designed to be rigorous and relevant to the real world.  Once we completely prepare our students for the future, we will begin to see our communities compete successfully in the global economy.  Georgia educational officials were represented on the standards development national committee.  As a result, the integrity of the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) was maintained.  The Georgia State Board of Education adopted the CCGPS on July 8, 2010.  The CCGPS provides a consistent framework to prepare students for success in college and/or the 21st century workplace.  The following components are incorporated in the CCGPS curriculum:

  • Alignment with college and work expectations;
  • Inclusion of rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
  • Builds upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
  • Collaboration by top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and,
  • Evidence and/or research-based standards.
