Thanks to businesses donating and multi-year efforts by staff, WCPS has been brightened by beautiful artwork that promotes literacy throughout the building. WCPS held an open building night this month to showcase artwork by artist Chris Rumble. This project promotes literacy by exposing students to 750 words and 1890 letters on the walls throughout the building. Words, letters, and sayings were chosen by WCPS teachers and support instruction of the Georgia Standards of Excellence.
As students enter the building, encouraging words are painted for viewing to start an awesome day. The grand hall has the largest mural that includes businesses that contributed to the project. The lunchroom and gym have art that encourages reading and student engagement. The halls have themes that are illustrated at each hall entrance. Each hall has artwork specific to the grade level from letters with pictures in PreK and kindergarten to character words, sight words, and subject area words in 1st and 2nd grade.
