WCHS Biology Students Make Blankets from Plastic Bags

Ms. Renney's Biology class applied their learning to a community service project.  In studying Ecology, her class has discussed the topics: reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Ms. Renney brought in samples of items she made out of plastic bags and bottles.  The students were amazed at how nice items made from discarded materials could look.  Ms. Renney and the students decided to complete a community service project and make blankets/mats for the homeless using plastic grocery bags.

Plastic bags were collected for a couple of weeks.  Sylvester Walmart allowed us to clean out their recycle bin of bags.  Ms. Renney constructed four peg looms for the students to weave the blankets.  The project required an abundance of work, but the students were dedicated.  They folded, cut, and weaved plastic bags into six blankets and two pillows.  Karen Rackley at the Sylvester-Worth Chamber of Commerce was helpful in finding recipients.  The Sylvester Police Department distributed the products to the homeless of Sylvester.

Great job Ms. Renney and students!
